“It is with regret that we have learned of the sudden passing away over the weekend of Dr. Lucas Potgieter” said Mr. Stephen Palos, Vice Chair of the Hunters Confederation of South Africa, CHASA.

Doc Lucas was an absolute doyen of hunting in Africa and is probably one of the best known names in hunting circles in South Africa. He wrote the popular “Boer en sy Roer” column in Landbouweekblad for many years and served on the ExCo of SA Hunters & Game Conservation Assoc. and as its President in 1976/7 when they were still part of the CHASA fold. He owned the well known gun shop The Powder Keg which held agency for some of the top brands of firearms and accessories.

“I last visited Doc Lucas a few months back when he called me to come discuss some aspects of the hunting fraternity. Sitting at his desk chatting in the shop I was reminded of his astute knowledge of the issues surrounding the greater hunting and wildlife industry and left with much insight as a result of the wisdom he shared” Mr. Palos said.

Dr. Lucas was also honoured by the CHASA Board in 2004 when he received the CHASA Golden Award certificate for his continued and outstanding services rendered to the South African hunters’ fraternity. This award was handed over to Dr. Lucas by the former CHASA president, Fred Mulders in Pretoria.

May his spirit enjoy great hunting in the afterlife and Wendy and family take strength from the condolences of the great brotherhood of hunters who have benefited from Doc’s service to our sport.

CHASA BETREUR DIE AFSTERWE VAN DR. LUCAS POTGIETER
“Dit is met groot deernis dat ons die afgelope naweek verneem het van die skielike heengaan van Dr. Lucas Potgieter” het Mnr. Stephen Palos, Visie Voorsitter van die Jagterskonfederasie van Suid Afrika, CHASA vandag in 'n verklaring gesê.

Dr. Lucas was 'n absolute doyen van jag in Afrika en is waarskynlik een van die mees bekende name in jagtersgeledere in Suid Afrika. Hy het in sy tyd die gewilde rubriek “Boer en Sy Roer” in die Landbouweekblad vir baie jare behartig en het ook gedien op die Uitvoerende Komitee van die Suid Afrikaanse Jagters- en Wildbewaringsvereniging en het ook die amp van President in 1976/7 beklee toe dié organisasie nog lid van CHASA was. Hy het die welbekende geweerwinkel Kruitvat besit en het met hoë gehalte gewere en ammunisie handel gedryf.

“Ek het Dr. Lucas 'n paar maande gelede persoonlik besoek nadat hy my geskakel het om sekere aspekte in die jagbedryf met hom te bespreek. Agter sy lessenaar in sy winkel terwyl ons gesels het, het ek opnuut bewus geraak van sy verstommende kennis oor sake wat die groter jag-en wildbedrywe intens raak en het as gevolg van sy groot wysheid, wat hy met my gedeel het, die vergadering met groter insig verlaat” het Mr. Palos gesê.

Dr. Lucas was ook deur CHASA se Raad in 2004 vereer toe hy die CHASA Goue Toekenning Sertifikaat ontvang het vir sy volgehoue en uitmuntende diens gelewer aan die Jagtersgemeenskap van Suid Afrika. Hierdie toekenning was aan Dr. Lucas oorhandig deur die vorige CHASA President, Fred Mulders in Pretoria.

Ons bid dat Wendy en die familie versterk sal word uit die meegevoel van die groot broederskap van jagters wat voordeel getrek het uit die dienste wat Dr. Lucas aan dié sport gelewer het.
