CIC Condemns Manipulation of Game Animals
18 Jan 2012
Abstain from hunting manipulated animals for trophy or other purposes, the CIC urges all its members and hunters and hunting associations.
The CIC states unequivocally that the principle of fair chase should govern hunting and that hunters should oppose unethical hunting.
At its November meeting, the CIC reinforced the IUCN mission “to influence, encourage and assist the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable.”
He CIC says it respects that the regulated harvest of individual wild animals conserves, protects and perpetuates the hunted populations and it reflects favourably on the hunting community when it:
• involves a personal code of behaviour based on fair chase
• shows respect for local customs and traditions
• complies with laws
• complies with international agreements
There should be no human intervention to balance wildlife needs. The CIC is concerned that replication and manipulation may have a detrimental effect on biodiversity and unwanted consequences for the genetic integrity of animals which live in the wild. Furthermore, it opposes artificial and unnatural manipulations of wildlife influencing pelage colour, body size, horn or antler size.
It also opposes intentional cross-breeding of species and sub-species, as well as artificial insemination, cloning and unnatural breeding programmes.
