Muzzle Loading Competency Certificate Update
In the Government Gazette of 14 December 2011 (No 34855) the Minister of
Police, Mr Nathi Mthethwa announced that the date by which possessors of
muzzle loaders need to apply for competency certificates for those firearms
has been extended from 9 January 2012 to 31 July 2012.
SAGA thanks the Minister for taking the pragmatic step of extending the
deadline and for listening to the representations made on the subject. .
Note however that, because the legislation now requires muzzle loader owners
also to have valid competency certificates, it will be necessary for those
affected to renew and/or apply for new black powder/explosives permits. The
Chief Inspector of Explosives is expected to issue a note explaining why new
and/or renewed permits are required and outline the processes you will have
to follow. We will keep you advised as the necessary information becomes
available.
In the mean time, SAGA wishes you a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous (and
Safe) New Year.
Ensure that your firearms are securely locked away before leaving home for
your holidays, and take care on the roads.
