| NYALA GOLF DAY - 2010 Mount Edgecombe Country Club |
Although a cold front was predicted, The Wichmanns and Kluseners teed off in perfect golfing weather at 10h30 from the first and tenth tees respectively. The led a field of 76 golfers around the first course at Mount Edgecombe in what turned out to be a real fun day.
As usual, this annual event aimed at raising funds for conservation was a great success. Our sponsors were once again very generous and the prizes on offer for the evening event nearly topped R30 000 in value. That was over and above the donations and sponsorships for the tee boxes, greens and evening event. If you add to that the auction, raffle tickets and Mulligans sold, we can only extend a heartfelt thank you to all of you who contributed.
The day started early in the lobby of the main clubhouse building where registration took place from 09h30 onwards. Hannelie was behind the desk (and I have to add she was an absolute pillar of strength in the run up to the day), making sure there was no change for the guys wanting to pay for a Mulligan with R100 notes – the balance went towards the raffle tickets. She raised a few eyebrows when she offered “Mullets” for sale, but whether it was a Mullet or a Mulligan, some golfers never needed them. The majority of the first tee shots went straight and generally play was at a brisk pace. Of course not all was perfect. There was the guy on the tenth who teed up and connected not so well on the down swing – his golf ball hit the marker just in front of him. And then there was the guy who was hit in the back, on the tee box, by one of his playing partners.
We were honoured this year by the attendance of our Association’s president, John Harris, who arrived at the course at noon. We hired a golf cart, purchased (a lot of) Jagermeister, and followed the players around the course for a while. Eventually we discovered the eight hole, a par five with a water fountain where we could rinse the jiggers, and we spent most of the time there. The four-balls arriving there had a choice – a shooter and then tee off, tee off and then a shooter, or a shooter – tee off – and another shooter. Most opted for the first, but in hindsight it could have been a mistake – not too many found the fairway. I think we can blame the head wind most of all though, and we are in the process of writing an apology to the home owner just to right of the fairway and about 200 metres away – he was bombarded and probably thought at some stage it was hailing.
All participants received prizes with the main ones being:
Winning four-ball: Mathew Pravda, Jeshika Ramsunder, Leon Arangies and Donald Thomas playing for Pravda, Terblanche and Knowles Attorneys.
Second: Stan Blyth, Mike Potgieter, Neville Thompson and Mike Cromhout playing out of the Chep South Africa stable.
Third: Roger Powell, Santosh, Barry Langston and Del van Bronkhorst playing for Glen Ashley Chiropractic Clinic.
Most golf: Jacques McGuire, Simon Mostert, Justin Engels, and Ryan Bishop playing for Blair Atholl Kwikspar.
Closest to pin on 3: Mathew Pravda.
Closest to pin on 9: Brian Middleton
Closest to pin on 11: Gary Willson
Closest to pin on 15: Chris Moller
Longest drive on 18: Simon Mostert.
Next year we want to go bigger – 30 four-balls minimum. One of our sponsors kindly offered to donate a floating trophy for the winning four-ball and the overall interest is very encouraging.
I want to again thank our sponsors, the entities who entered four-balls, the players, Mount Edgecome Gold Club and everybody who assisted in making it a memorable day. |
