Survey report and Minister’s directive on hunting and live game sales

Survey report and Minister’s directive on hunting and live game sales // Opname verslag en Minister se direktief oor jag en lewendige wildverkope

Goeiedag WRSA-lede, (Please see English below)

  1. (On)duidelikheid oor jag

 Dear WRSA members,

  1. (Un)clear about hunting

The ministerial directive on hunting and live game trade has not been published yet.

Meanwhile, WRSA is aware of a WhatsApp doing the rounds in which it appears that the SAPS in the Western Cape’s interpretation of “hunting” rather refers to game farmers culling on their own farms, and not to recreational hunting.

We therefore encourage all wildlife ranchers to rather wait until the directive is published, to provide the necessary clarity, before arranging any hunting on your farms.

  1. COVID-19 IMPACT ON THE WILDLIFE RANCHING INDUSTRY

Thanks again to everyone who completed the recent WRSA questionnaire at the end of April.

               Attached is the general report.

We are still working on each province’s report that we will forward to members who
participated.

Online survey on Cattle Egrets

I hope this finds you well. My name is Jennifer Cele and I am part of Prof Colleen Downs’ lab at UKZN’s School of Life Science. I’m conducting a Masters level study on Cattle Egrets and am looking to find out what people within the Ethekwini and uMgungundlovu municipalities think of them. They are a commonly local bird in both rural and urban areas facing threats such as habitat loss. I’d like to hear from those who may be familiar with Cattle Egrets as well as those completely out of tune with their local wildlife. I’d like just a few moments of their time to conduct an online survey titled “Human perceptions of the Western Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) across an urban to rural land-use gradient in the municipalities of uMgungundlovu and eThekwini KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa”.

Would it be possible to have this shared throughout your network or to bird groups within the study area? If so that would be greatly appreciated.
